A Fond Memory

Tonight, I lived
a fond memory.

I knew
while we sat
in the dimly lit darkness,
rocking forward and backward,
our thoughts as free
as a wandering balloon,
that the moment
I was living
would one day be
a fond memory,
the kind that makes
your chest swell
and your voice catch,
if only for a moment.

You were there,
across the peaceful darkness,
watching a curious cat
prowl a lonely street;
the cicadas hummed
a sweet southern tune,
the kind that lingers
in your ears
as you fade off to sleep,
reminding you
that everything
will be all right,
and that no other problems
need be solved tonight.

Tonight, I lived
a fond memory,
and you were there,
the secret to it all.

    1. Thanks, Dad! I really enjoyed writing this one, and I am thankful for how it turned out 🙂
