Finding Gold

I have often
wondered
why many
who find gold
throw it away;
do they not understand
its value?

Why
would someone
discard
such a rare and
beautiful treasure
after he had succeeded
in acquiring it?

While ignorance
is a lamentable reason
to lose something
so precious,
it is less tragic
than the reason
I believe many
may abandon
such a prize;
the gold,
in its brilliance,
leaves no darkness
unilluminated,
and many
are overcome
with feelings
of shame
when its light
exposes truths
they preferred
to keep hidden.

If only they knew
that the purpose
of this light
was not to
illuminate darkness,
alone,
but to destroy it
entirely,
leaving the holder
of the gold
shining
in his own right.
