Of Puppies and Rabbits

The rabbit flees all things,
avoiding enemies
and friends, alike.

The puppy approaches all things,
meeting pleasures
and threats
with the same vigor.

Neither is wrong,
but how much better
if each had the mind of man,
allowing both to assess
a situation before acting?

The rabbit
would not forfeit the help
of small children
offering vegetables,
and the puppy
would not invite the claws
of wary house cats.

How unfortunate, then,
that man, who has this mind,
often ignores it,
preferring instead the blunt,
reactionary life
of puppies and rabbits…

Hi, my name is Jacob Anton (ANN-tin) Davis. I am a husband, father, attorney, and writer. I have written poetry and fiction as a hobby for the past 20 years, but I launched J. Anton Poetry in 2019 to share my writing publicly. The poems of mine on this site largely describe my thoughts about the deeper connections and meaning in our everyday lives.
