Were I to build
a ship for the sea,
where might I
test its limits
and cut its teeth?
Should I wade it
into placid waters,
flanked by beaches,
protected from waves?
Should I loose the sails
upon a lake,
observing
how the wind behaves?
Or should I find
a stormy night,
and see how long
the vessel braves?
We must sharpen
each belief we hold
by grinding it
against its opposite,
lest we should taste
a stormy sea
as wreckage floats
on top of it.
