Speechless

When I consider
the decisions
of many
to adopt and foster
children,
I am speechless.

This calling,
as it is nothing less,
to care for, love,
and welcome others
during the most vulnerable
stages of life,
is one of
the great wonders
of this world.

It consists of
a simple,
volitional choice
to bind oneself
to another,
to intentionally
and unnecessarily
accept the sacred title
of father or mother,
an honor
which demands
every ounce
of one’s strength.

Few actions
shake the world
so violently
or wonderfully,
sending reverberations
through time
that may never cease.

Hi, my name is Jacob Anton (ANN-tin) Davis. I am a husband, father, attorney, and writer. I have written poetry and fiction as a hobby for the past 20 years, but I launched J. Anton Poetry in 2019 to share my writing publicly. The poems of mine on this site largely describe my thoughts about the deeper connections and meaning in our everyday lives.

  1. Wow Jacob this really hit home with me. I’m really thankful to know someone that is willing to open up share their thoughts on paper like this. This poem helps me to know that Megan and I have made a good decision to pursue adoption and foster care. Love you man!
