The Life of an Artist

How many artists
have died unknown,
striving, creating,
and dreaming alone,
thanklessly working
themselves to the bone,
how many artists
have died unknown?

How many artists
have died depressed,
wailing and weeping
and beating their chest,
constantly wary
but finding no rest,
how many artists
have died depressed?

How many artists
have lived at ease,
dreaming and doing
their work as they please,
no deadlines to fear
or boss to appease,
how many artists
have lived at ease?

How many artists
have lived inspired,
joyfully working
no matter how tired,
searching for beauty,
not things acquired,
how many artists
have lived inspired?

The life of an artist
is likely a dance,
between both heartbreak
and stunning romance,
a daring adventure,
a taking of chance,
the life of an artist
is likely a dance.

Hi, my name is Jacob Anton (ANN-tin) Davis. I am a husband, father, attorney, and writer. I have written poetry and fiction as a hobby for the past 20 years, but I launched J. Anton Poetry in 2019 to share my writing publicly. The poems of mine on this site largely describe my thoughts about the deeper connections and meaning in our everyday lives.
